Parental leave

When you can get parental leave

Members who are pregnant can also take maternity leave before and after their baby is born.

When your parental leave starts

How much parental leave you can get

If you’re on a flexible service determination, (SERCAT 6) you only need leave for the days you normally work.

Unpaid parental leave

Example

You take 8 weeks (40 working days) of paid parental leave at full pay and 3 weeks of paid recreation leave at full pay.

You can take up to a further 55 weeks of unpaid parental leave (66-8-3=55).

Defence won't contribute to your superannuation while you're on unpaid parental leave, but you may be able to make your own contributions, during your leave or after you return to work. Check with your super fund.
