Medicare levy and Medicare levy surcharge

Before making any decisions about your finances, you should seek independent financial advice. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) or an accredited tax agent should be able to provide you with information about your personal taxation obligations.

Members on continuous full-time service

Example

You're a member of the Permanent Forces who transitions to the Reserves SERCAT 5 during the financial year.

You’re in the Permanent Forces from July to March, and you’re in the Reserves from April to June.

You won’t have to pay the levy or the levy surcharge for yourself from July to March, but you may have to pay it for the April to June period.

Members with a spouse, partner or children

The definitions of spouse, de facto partner and child used by the ATO may be different from the definitions used by Defence. You should review the ATO website for more information
