First Nations Language Allowance

Eligibility

If you only use your First Nations language skills for greetings and ceremonial uses, you won’t be eligible for this allowance.

Apply for First Nations Language Allowance

Example

You complete the interpreter assessment on 1 February 2026.

You’re assigned to a Regional Force Surveillance Group on-country patrol on 1 March 2026 and your CO has approved your application for the allowance.  

You use your First Nations language skills to meet an operational need on 1 April 2026. You’ll get the allowance soon after 1 April 2026.

As long as you still meet the eligibility criteria, you’ll next be eligible to apply for the allowance on 1 April 2027.
