Leave while in a hardship location

Example

You’re posted to Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands for 24 months. The ordinary posting period for the Solomon Islands is 24 months (Column 2). You’ll be able to take 4 assisted leave trips:

  • 1 trip to your regional relief centre (the capital city in Australia with the lowest allowable travel cost other than Hobart or Darwin)
  • 3 trips to your relief leave centre, Brisbane.

The usual interval between your trips is 4.8 months.

  1. Use the table on Hardship location conditions of service to find out the length of an ordinary posting period and the number of assisted leave trips you can take.

The ordinary posting period for the Solomon Islands is 24 months during which you can take 4 assisted leave trips.

  2. Take the total number of trips during an ordinary posting period and add 1.

    4 + 1 = 5

  3. Subtract the number of months in the ordinary posting period for your location from the total number of months in your posting period.

    36 – 24 = 12

  4. Multiply the result of Step 2 by the result of Step 3.

    5 x 12 = 60

  5. Divide the result of Step 4 by the ordinary posting period for your location.

    60 ÷ 24 = 2.5

  6. Add the total number of trips during an ordinary posting period to the result of Step 5.

    2.5 + 4 = 6.5

  7. Round up the result of Step 6 to the nearest whole number.

6.5 rounds up to 7. You would get 7 total leave trips during your 36-month posting period.

At least one of your additional leave trips must be to a regional leave centre.

  1. Use the table on Hardship location conditions of service to find out the length of an ordinary posting period and the number of assisted leave trips you can take.

The ordinary posting period for the Solomon Islands is 24 months during which you can take 4 assisted leave trips.

  2. Take the total number of trips during an ordinary posting period and multiply it by your actual posting period in months.

    4 x 15 = 60

  3. Divide the result of Step 2 by the ordinary posting period for your location.

    60 ÷ 24 = 2.5

  4. Round the result of Step 3 up to the nearest whole number.

2.5 rounds up to 3. You’ll get 3 leave trips during your 15-month posting period.
