Childbirth in an overseas posting location from 1 July 2026

The benefits listed on this page will be available from 1 July 2026. For benefits available before 1 July 2026, visit Healthcare for your family overseas and Excess health costs

If you’re thinking about giving birth overseas, you should consider any issues the child may face later in life, such as mandatory conscription for the birth country.

If you’re pregnant

If your dependant is pregnant

APS employees on a long-term posting overseas and their dependants may also access the benefits listed on this page.

Your dependant won’t be forced to return to Australia to give birth if they’re not approved to claim the costs in the overseas location, however, you will be responsible for all costs associated with the birth

If you or your dependant travel back to Australia for more than 56 consecutive days, your overseas living allowances may be reduced.

You must be on approved leave for the whole time you’re away from the posting location.
