Living-in accommodation (LIA) is barracks-style accommodation usually offered on-base. Some LIA is offered off-base, for example if you're posted to HMAS Cairns.
You can stay in LIA for work or training if you live either by yourself or away from your family. You may need to pay an ongoing contribution to stay in LIA.

The type of accommodation and facilities you get depends on the reason you're staying in LIA, and your rank.
Defence Housing Australia (DHA) manages LIA. You can apply for it through DHA Online Services.
When you’re required to stay in LIA
You may need to stay in LIA to perform your role or undertake training.
You can apply to live out. You can do this before you start duty in your location.
You choose to stay in LIA
You can choose to stay in LIA even if you're not required to.
You can apply to stay in LIA on a short-term basis if you can't live in your usual accommodation, for example, if you can’t stay in your usual accommodation due to personal or safety reasons.
You'll pay the highest contribution rate for your LIA.
What to bring
You'll usually only need to bring personal belongings to your LIA. Depending on the LIA you're in, you may have limited storage space.
Check with your accommodation manager about what facilities are available in your LIA.
You aren't allowed pets in LIA.
