New superannuation funds and existing choice superannuation funds

For new members

Existing Defence super funds: Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits (DFRDB) scheme and Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS) are closed to new members.

For existing members

The following information relates to choice members. If you’re in DFRDB or MSBS, the remaining super conditions may not apply to you. If you’re in DFRDB, go to the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits scheme page. If you’re in MSBS, go the Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme page.

Compulsory contributions for choice funds

If you’re a member of the Reserves who is working reserve days, Defence doesn’t contribute to your super. This is because your pay is tax free, so it doesn't qualify for superannuation payments.

If you’re a member of MSBS or DFRDB, check your special conditions information about contributions.

Voluntary contributions for choice funds

Before making any decisions about your super, you should seek independent financial advice.

If you have more than one super fund, contributions to any of your funds count towards your caps.

Contributions for choice members when you’re on leave

If you’re a member of MSBS or DFRDB, check your special conditions information about contributions.

Switching funds

If you're contributing to MSBS, you can switch out of MSBS and into a choice fund, but you can't switch back into it. If you're currently a member of DFRDB, you'll need to stay in it until you leave the ADF.

Invalidity and death cover for choice members

If you’re a member of MSBS or DFRDB, check your special conditions information about invalidity and death benefits
