A member's rank may change during their career.

If you're promoted or demoted, your benefits and assistance may change.

Many of your benefits won't take effect until you're posted at the new rank. Changes to your pay will take immediate effect once your rank changes.

Housing

When your rank change moves you into a different rank group, your rent band or living-in level may change. This affects how much you pay for your housing.

If you're promoted on posting, you can secure suitable housing for your rank before you're posted.

Contact Defence Housing Australia (DHA) once you know your rank is changing. They can assess your housing options.

Live in a Service residence

The contribution you pay for your Service residence may change when you change ranks.

You may be eligible for a Service residence in a higher rent band if you're posting to a new location on promotion.

If you're promoted during your posting, you can stay in your current Service residence. You'll need to pay the contribution that applies for your new rank group.

If you're demoted during your posting, you can stay in your current Service residence. You may pay a lower contribution if your rank group changes. You'll be eligible for a Service residence in a lower rent band the next time you're posted.

Live in a home and get rent allowance

Your rent allowance may change when you change ranks.

If you're promoted, you'll usually get more rent allowance. You'll be eligible for a higher rent ceiling on your next posting.

If you're demoted, you'll usually get less rent allowance. If you rent a home in a rent ceiling based on your old rank, you can stay in your current home. You may pay a lower contribution if your rank group changes.

Stay in living-in accommodation

You may be eligible for a different level of living-in accommodation (LIA) when you change ranks. If you move to higher or lower level of LIA, your contribution rate will change.

Moving homes

You're not eligible for a Defence paid move if your rank changes during your posting.

If you're posting to a new location, you can get a Defence paid move.

Contact Toll Transitions to manage your move.

Leave

Your leave benefits won't be affected when you change rank. If you take leave, or get it paid out, it will be paid at the rate of your current rank.
