Work out how much you get

The maximum daily rate may be reduced for any meals received during your flights and by your arrival and departure times.

Example

You’re a Major who’s posted to Canada.

You have a partner and 2 children who will be living with you. The children are 12 and 10.

Your maximum daily rate of allowance for you, your partner and your 12-year-old is CA$222 for meals and CA$48 for incidentals each.

Your maximum daily rate of allowance for your 10-year-old is CA$148 for meals ($222 x 0.6667) and CA$32 ($48 x 0.6667) for incidentals.

Your maximum total daily rate of allowance is CA$990 ($222 x 3 + $148 for meals + $48 x 3 + $32 for incidentals.)

Rest periods

Travel by an alternative route

Example

The business class airfare for the approved route costs $10,000.

Your airfare for the alternative route costs $15,000.

Defence will pay $10,000 and you’ll need to pay the extra $5,000.

If the cost of the alternative route is lower, Defence will pay for the alternative route but you won’t get paid the difference.

Example

The business class airfare for the direct route costs $10,000.

The alternative route of air and land travel costs $8,000.

Defence will pay $8,000.
