Settling-in allowance and settling-out allowance overseas

You may also get temporary accommodation allowance if you need to stay in temporary accommodation before you leave Australia.

When you can get the allowance

If your partner is an ADF member or an APS employee, only the partner who's getting the overseas allowances will get the settling-in allowance and settling-out allowance.

Work out how much you’ll get

Example

You’re a Captain who’s posted to the United States.

You have a partner and 2 children. The children are 12 and 10.

Your daily rate of allowance for you, your partner and your 12-year-old is US$125.33 ($188 x 0.6667) each.

Your daily rate of allowance for your 10-year-old is US$83.56 ($125.33 x 0.6667).

Your total daily rate of allowance is US$459.55 ($125.33 x 3 + $69.34).

The allowance is considered a fringe benefit but not FBT reportable. It may affect your tax assessable income.
