Reunion travel if you have an eligible person

Example

You’re on a long-term overseas posting to India.

Your partner and child live in Australia.

You can use one benefit for your partner and your child to travel to your location. One benefit is used even though two people are travelling.

To claim the cost of any ground transport, you must take the most efficient and economical means of transport available to and from your reunion benefit location.

Example

You’re on a long-term overseas posting to Italy. Your partner lives in Canberra.

Defence will pay for your partner to travel to your location in Italy.

When your partner arrives at the airport in Italy, they must take the most efficient and economical means of transport to your posting location, which is a train. Defence may reimburse the train fare.

Example

You’re on a long-term overseas posting to Fiji. Your partner lives in Washington DC, USA.

Defence will pay for your partner to travel from Washington DC to your location in Fiji.

Note that in this situation, Defence will only pay for costs up to what it would have cost to travel from Australia to your location. If the travel costs more than this, you or your dependant will have to pay the difference.

Example

You’re on a long-term overseas posting to Afghanistan. Your partner lives in London.

At the time that you want to organise your reunion travel, your partner is not allowed to come to your posting location. Instead, you decide to reunite with them in Italy, as it’s between your two locations.

In this situation, Defence will only pay for your partner to travel from London to reunite with you in Italy.

Example

You’re on a long-term overseas posting to Jordan. Your partner lives in Denmark.

At the time that you want to organise your reunion travel, your partner is not allowed to come to your posting location.

You can use your benefit to travel to Denmark to reunite with your partner.

In this situation, Defence will pay for your travel as you’re the only one travelling.

Example

You live in your overseas posting location with your recognised partner and dependent child.

Your child’s other parent lives in Australia.

You can use a reunion travel benefit for your child to travel to Australia to visit their other parent.
